Martin working with his new brushes. They are about 2 1/2 ft long with hog bristle. They come with a slot cut in the end of the handle so they can also be used as an arrow. OK OK!! I had ordered some brushes on sale,, buy one get one..I didn't read the fine print. Once Martin saw them and stopped laughing he decided he had to have his picture taken with one.

No Oil here !!!

No pictures to post. Been busy at work. Hopefully I will get across the street and take some soon. So far no Oil has hit our beaches. The water is clear and beautiful. At one point the oil was ten miles offshore but with the winds and storms its moved to well over one hundred miles now,,,,Thank God. But still many areas in other states have been devastated. Such a sad and avoidable continuing event.

Summer season was in full swing until BP oil spill messed things up. So now the fourth of July just around the corner and the beaches are really empty compared to normal. This year I had returned to Airbrushing T-Shirts after a ten year break. Just as things were gearing up BP oil spill shut them down. Still the money has been better than say... being a shampoo boy at a salon. So im posting a few pictures to show you the current remains of a tropical storm that also hit this week... Enough already!!! As you can see not much oil if that even is oil.!! But if you watch CNN Florida is covered with oil... At this time the Beaches are clean,,,water is clear and beautiful as ever.

Last trip to the beach this lady surf fishing caught my eye. Some day soon I hope to learn how to take pictures. I've been reading up on bracketing photos. My camera has a setting for that but I am clueless.

Another trip to favorite local marina. With everyone's busy schedule it has been difficult to find the time to sneak off and paint. But alas Martin and I made it out to one of our favorite places to paint. All was well , birds chirping and squirrels rustling, a light breeze blew across the water. You know that couldn't last. It was the after winter unveiling of Martin's legs.....SHORTS!! The glare was fierce. I quickly shielded my eyes as I turned only to see a poor squirrel trying to run . Unable to see he stepped out off the limb falling and screaming. Quickly I tossed some paper towels to break his fall. Missing the paper towels the poor little squirrel hit a pile of dead palm fronds. Acting like a trampoline the squirrel bounced up into the air flying over my head and landing on Martin's neck. The little squirrel shot down the front of his shirt. Panic set in as Martin fought to remove the squirrel. As fast as it had all happened it was over. The little squirrel fell out of his shirt and ran into the woods. Martin lifted his shirt to reveal small purple spots. Later we determined they were Squirrel hickies.
Disclaimer.... Everything you just read is Not true...well most of it. No animals were hurt during the writing of this pack of lies. No further word has been received as to if we shall be going painting again...

Another Day at the beach. Yesterday Martin and I went on our weekly painting trip. Along with a cold breeze and Spring Breakers all over it still turned out to be a nice time.

Picture below is of a cactus like plant the hides in the sand on the dunes. Deadly little things that will go right through your shoe if you step on them. The thorns are around 2 1/2 inches long. Very painful , just ask Martin,,,lol

Another adventure

Recently on another trip to the beach to paint with the mercury dipping down into the low 40's, the wind was blowing at a gale force. Martin complained about how he left his jacket with the hoodie at home and kept eyeing my Carhart. I offered him my jacket as I headed off to the beach. Walking a series of dunes while carrying what seemed like 180 lbs of gear, I realized Martin was still hanging onto my Carhart. I shrugged him off and the negotiated a trade, my beanie for an old sable brush with 3 hairs, a must for painting vegetation. The deal sealed Martin headed back where the truck was parked on a bluff over looking the beach. Once again I continued on the path up and down the dunes being sand blasted as the wind gusted to a flash freezing 40 mph.
After hanging on to my easel while painting for an hour or so I discovered at some point I had put my glove into the white paint. I had paint everywhere. Feeling the cold and not hearing anything from Martin, knowing he had no Hoodie and only a cheap beannie (I kept the good one), I decided to pack up and start the long climb back up the hill. As I walked my mind played out different scenes . Poor Martin frozen to bumper of truck. Maybe he had wandered to the donut shop across the street? I quickened my pace to find him all tucked in the back of his truck, Mp3 player blasting, huge tropical drink(He had traded my x beanie for) and a bag of chips.

Another painting adventure survived...Barely!!! I'm sure I gave at least a pint of blood to the local bug chapter. Encountered one rattle snake and a pelican that had the look in his eyes that said, " I can take him"! Other than that, the Burrito at Peppers was great (after painting treat). My painting was a total flop. No sense in" fibbing" about it! I mean yuck..Was totally blinded by the glare off the water and too busy fighting gnats and flies ( I could spend another paragraph on excuses but I'm sure you get the idea). I did however get a great shot of Martin before he was carried away by a swarm.Notice the nice equipment, pretty umbrella and all the fancy gadgets to attach. I had a dead palm frond stuck down the back of my shirt hanging over my shoulder in an attempt to block some of the sun.
Once Martin started talking about his great time in Hawaii and the ladies in grass skirts I quickly decided to remove the palm frond. However the visor he loaned me that his daughter had left in the truck wasn't much better. The fact that it said Cheerleading Camp in hot pink across the bill didn't help.
This for some reason was the most popular sand spot on the bay.
All in all I would say it was another good time out painting even though my painting was a flop or should I say floppier than usual..lol. Its always fun to go have some laughs. Ok I was just kidding about the Martin stuff,,geeze.. He is an awesome artist. Next two weeks we won't be going. Martin has a show to get ready for in South Florida. Check out his web page here.

This was about 75 feet down the beach from where Hurricane Ida painting was done three days earlier. If you look close you can see the gnats that gave up the ghost for art..lol And yes my photography still stinks.

Painting again at Panama City Beach Florida. The remnants of Hurricane Ida was still kicking up the surf and raining off and on. Between the wind and the cold rain it was quite a challenge, but in the end well worth it and lots of fun.

Camp Helen

Painting at Camp Helen.
Went painting again with Martin. We ended up at Camp Helen, located on the Gulf Coast at the west end of Panama City Beach. Beautiful little state park, followed by a 16 mile forced march through soft sugar white sand up and down dunes that reached heights of 300 ft( ok maybe 30 ft). After all that marching we were still maybe half way to the water. At this point I faked a cramp (something I learned from my girlfriend Carrie) and told Martin I wouldn't be able to go any farther. He grumbled a few words as I caught him thanking God. He then removed a flowered sun dress from his bag. A tradition we have had since the early days of painting. Whoever whines has to wear the dress.. My turn,,,sigh. Had a great time painting and finished the day off with a stop at Five Guys Burgers at Pier Park.

Deep South

Had a great day out painting with my friend Martin. We ended up at the new shrimp boat restaurant again. Lots of nice views from their Marina. This old shrimp boat called Deep South was sporting a huge banner saying fresh shrimp. I was going to name this painting fresh shrimp but... Martin said he was going to name his painting fresh shrimp. I considered calling this one Fresher shrimp than Martins... but in the end I decided on Deep South.

nocturnes

Some pictures of nocturnes done recently..It is different trying to paint at night. Top pic shows the lED lights I use(Friend Martin took the picture with his cell phone...some new phone that will do almost everything including chop and dice). The lights are Mighty Bright brand. I believe these were made to be used by musicians. Eventually took some cadmium yellow orange and thinner and painted a thin layer over the lights to warm them up. Seems to have really helped.

My friend Martin and I went out last Friday to do our weekly nocturne. We ended up at Treasure Island Marina on Panama City Beach. I set up under a street light, which I soon regretted because of the flow of tourists. Martin was smart and hid at the end of a dock. I could hear him chuckle every time I became the center attraction. One guy insisted I look at 50 pictures he had on his phone of wood burning art. Next week I will hide.! I am still having trouble taking pictures of artwork and getting colors right. The orange in the hull is barely visible on the painting. In the photo it is way too chromatic.

Yesterday my friend Martin Figlinski and I went out painting. We ended up in St. Andrews at the new Shrimp Boat Restaurant. It was raining steadily so we took cover under a walkway on the side of the building. When we started painting it was before the restaurant in the back opened. But by the time we were done the restaurant was in full swing, blocking off our exit. I really didn't want to haul our stuff through a crowd of people trying to enjoy lunch. Well... we finally decided to swim across the marina area to the other side. One problem though Martin only knows how to tread water. I could see him treading away and being at the mercy of the current. Besides I was sure his wife wanted him back.So I put him on my shoulders and waded and swam to the other side. All the time him complaining about being bitten by a crab. ( I would like to say at this point in the story ..Most of this is Not true!!) ok.. what really happened was I had a great time and we snuck out another way. I look forward to more painting adventures. If Martin is still talkin to me after this..lolol

I am not sure how many people are familiar with the work of Paul Calle. His early years were spent as an illustrator working at NASA. He did the artwork for the Apollo stamps and many incredible paintings. I had the pleasure of seeing some of his work at Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa Ok. His pencil work is so amazing that on many Jobs he would turn in a rough for clients to see and they would print the rough. He also has a book about drawing.. The pencil. Found the book on Amazon although it was much cheaper 20 years ago. I could not find an official Calle website. Here is a link to see some of his work.

Ok I must be the worlds worst photographer. No matter what I tried I can not get a decent picture. It has been raining here(less sun light). Nice change from the 100 degree weather we have had. This picture is way too cool and grainy. I talked to Jeff Hayes about taking pictures and it seems I will have to order an HDR program to help me. I am currently using a pentax K20D camera. Has lots of buttons and neat stuff , have no clue what they do though. Well mostly no clue. So far camera just looks cool and it gets me into events without being questioned. Must look press like. Looks like I will have to buy more stuff...lights etc.

This started out as a really interesting subject. But I think what was interesting to me was the area it self. Wish I had backed up a bit from the subject to show more of the mood, but still fun to paint and as always a learning experience. Along the back of the buildings is a seawall with a 15 foot drop to the water. Part of an old barge docking area for the papermill that use to be in Port ST. Joe Florida. Lots of old huge tractor tires used for bumpers. Old railroad tracks. Very cool place. I'm still pleased at how it turned out, perhaps we will go back there again and ill paint the view 180 from this one.

Ok back to being as serious as i can. I haven't posted anything lately due to the fact I havent painted much. Its been a weird month. But I plan on gettin back at it this week or next , for sure by the week after that. Forgotten Coast Plein Air Paint-out is coming up. I hope to attend some of that. My friend Marty pays me to walk around and talk about how great he is, steal paint tubes from other artists' easels when their not looking and kick their tripods. Just kidding!!! geeze! Martin Figlinski will be participating again this year. Great Artist check him out. Along with many other great artists. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Scott Powers,(incredible artist) Theodore Tihansky, just a few of the great artists participating in the paint out. Usually when posting I forward the post to my (hopefully still) Girlfriend Carrie and she corrects all my mistakes,,but for some reason shes not talking to me,,so decipher it yaself!
